Hello and welcome to another week here at 1guysmindlessmoviereviews.com. I hope everyone is doing great this week and that your NCAA basketball brackets aren’t busted like mine. Actually, mine isn’t that bad, but I’m also not going to win either. But it’s all in good fun and I’m going to spend four days watching the games anyway. I might as well have some fun while doing so. This week’s review is also a day later than usual, it’s Spring Break week in our household, so we had some time off school and work and spent some time together. It was also my wife and I’s 25th wedding anniversary, so it was nice to have some time together and not think about work stuff for a day or two.

Ok, so onto the task at hand. Since it was Spring Break, I took a break from watching some of the styles of movies I have been watching and switched to a family movie we could all sit through. That, mixed with going to a theater I hadn’t been to since 2017, was fun. So, what better family movie to choose than a Disney movie… in this case, “Snow White”. At this point, the story of Snow White is so old, I shouldn’t have to put out a spoiler warning, but I will anyway, just in case someone is new to the story. There will be spoilers ahead, so be warned.

I honestly have mixed feelings about “Snow White” after letting it sit in my mind for a few days. I hadn’t seen the cartoon in a very long time, but the story was very similar to what I remember. With that in mind, Disney did a good job of re-telling a classic and it did look phenomenal. Its cinematography was well done, and it was graphically beautiful. Where I lacked was the casting. I also need to note that I had heard rumblings about this movie and that there was some controversy surrounding it. I intentionally stayed away from it until after I watched it so it wouldn’t sway my opinion.

I’ll start with Zegler as the titular character Snow White. All in all, not a bad performance on her part. It wasn’t anything extraordinary by any means, but it wasn’t bad though either. I was surprised that they made the outfit exactly the same as the cartoon and didn’t try to modernize it, but again, not bad. Burnap as Jonathan wasn’t nearly as good as Zegler but seemed to fit the part he was playing… just wasn’t much there. But the worst by far was Gadot as the Evil Queen. She played that part so poorly; I don’t even know how to describe it properly. The songs she sang were emotionless and didn’t fit her character at all. The acting itself was surprisingly bad. I expected more from her.

The final bit of acting to discuss is the seven dwarfs. So, while I was watching the film play out in front of me, my first thought was that it was fun. They made the dwarfs look very cartoonish, and it played to the remake very well. However, the more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve wondered why they didn’t use real actors to fill those roles. This is right on par with what others are saying as well. I agree, but at the same time, the film didn’t look any worse because of the CGI dwarfs. In fact, when Snow White visits them, that may be the best part of the movie. However, I think they could have some really fun stuff with seven real actors playing those roles as well.

Besides all of that, it wasn’t a terrible movie, despite the absolutely awful reviews on IMDB. I know why Disney updates the cartoons for a live-action reboot. Sometimes it works (Aladdin), and sometimes it doesn’t (The Jungle Book). Sometimes, something that was made in 1937 needs to be updated for today’s audience. But having bad acting doesn’t help any of this. It’s just a shame that something that costs this much money and took years to make comes out as just a mediocre final product. With that, I will give it a perfectly mediocre score of 5 out of 10!

That’s it for this week here at 1guysmindlessmoviereviews.com. But, I would love to know your thoughts on “Snow White”. Have you seen it yet? Were you able to stay away from the news reports before you watched it? How do you think this ranks among the other live-action remakes that Disney has done? Let me know in the comments below and I will be back next week with another mindless movie review of some sort.
